Safe Horizon: One in four girls and one in six boys are abused, usually at the hands of someone they know.
Dear Public Service Director,
In the United States, there are more than three million reports of child abuse and neglect each year, involving approximately 6 million children. In New York City alone, there are more than 60,000 reports each year. One in four girls and one in six boys are abused, usually at the hands of someone they know. Child abuse is all too common in our society— and many people have trouble accepting its reality. Safe Horizon’s “Child Abuse is Everybody’s Business” campaign encourages those who suspect child abuse cases to identify the signs of abuse and immediately report on their suspicions or concerns.
Each year, Safe Horizon’s four nationally accredited Child Advocacy Centers help more than 4,000 children in New York City and provide an essential community response to New York City’s most vulnerable victims of physical and sexual abuse, giving child victims the foundation they need to move from crisis to confidence. In light of Safe Horizon’s mission to provide support, prevent violence and promote justice for victims of crime and abuse, their families and communities, the organization has produced a 30 second public service announcement (PSA) for broadcast outlets narrated by actress Stephanie March from NBC’s Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Extensive research has guided the tone and manner of the PSA and aims to generate awareness about child abuse and reiterate the message that we can all be part of the solution.
The campaign comes on the heels of Child Abuse Awareness Month in which Safe Horizon, along with the Yale Childhood Violent Trauma Center, announced the findings of a successful pilot program of a new treatment called the Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI). The treatment, pioneered by Safe Horizon’s four Child Advocacy Centers in New York City and featured in the New York Times, showcased results in which 54% of those treated saw a decrease in trauma symptoms and felt significantly better after the intervention.
Please support us in our continuing efforts to encourage child abuse awareness by airing this “Child Abuse is Everybody’s Business” PSA and making your audience aware that by learning the signs of child abuse and reporting, they can make a difference.
